Increased Cruise Ship Capacity Fuelling Passenger Growth
Thursday, May 1st, 2008
The increased capacity offered by cruise ships such as Ocean Village Two and Navigator of the Seas, operated by Ocean Village and Royal Caribbean International respectively, is helping to fuel a growth in cruise passenger numbers, it has been reported.
According to new figures from the European Cruise Council (ECC), the number of Europeans taking cruise holidays increased by 17 per cent last year, TravelMole reports.
In total, four million Europeans took cruises in 2007 compared to 2.6 million five years ago.
"There is no doubt that Europe is the new centre of gravity for the cruise industry and we’re seeing increasing numbers of cruise lines basing ships in the region, which will encourage even more Europeans to cruise in future," David Dingle, ECC chairman, commented.
TravelMole noted that Thomson Cruises’ Calypso is another high-capacity cruise ship that has helped to accelerate the growth of cruising.
This trend could well be set to expand exponentially following the launch of P&O superliner Ventura and Independence of the Seas, belonging to Royal Caribbean Cruises.
